Desai Has High Post (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW DELHI, March 13. The new Government of the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, was sworn in by President Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan today with Morarj! Desai as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
Mrs Gandhi kept four of her most senior ministers in their old posts—Mr Mohamed Ali Currin Chagla as External Affairs Minister, Mr Y. B. Chavan, as Home Minister, Mr Swaran Singh, as Defence Minister and Mr Asoka Mehta as Planning Minister. Mr Jagjivan Ram, an Untouchable and veteran minister from Nehru’s Cabinet, got the crucial food portfolio. A surprise addition to the Cabinet is Mr Karan Singh, Maharajah of Kashmir, and at present Governor of Kashmir, who will give up his Governorship to take the Tourism and Civil Aviation portfolio. Mrs Gandhi’s new Cabinet has 19 Cabinet ministers and 14 Ministers of State.
