AMBASSADOR TO U.S.— MR FRANK CORNER

(N.Z. Press Association} WELLINGTON, Mar, 14. New Zealand’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Mr Frank Corner, has been appointed the New Zealand Ambassador to the United States. He succeeds Mr George Laking, who was recently appointed Secretary of the External Affairs Department. Announcing the appointment of the new Ambassador tonight, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said: “The Embassy in the United States is our oldest and most important post in a foreign country and it is appropriate that it should continue to be filled by one of our senior and experienced diplomats.” Mr Holyoake said Mr Corner would take up his post in

Washington at the conclusion of the special session of the United Nations General Assembly—probably about the end of May. Joined In 1945 Mr Corner, who is aged 46, joined the Department of External Affairs in 1945. He served as First Secretary in the New Zealand Embassy in Washington between 1948-1951, and then as Counsellor in London until 1958. After serving as Deputy. Secretary of External Affairs for a period, he was appoint, ed permanent representative to the United Nations in New York with the rank of Ambassador in 1962. Led Delegations

Mr Corner has led successive delegations to the United Nations Genera! Assembly, and in 1966 represented New Zealand on the Security Council. The Prime Minister commented:

/established a reputation as a polished speaker, a skilful negotiator, and one of the most effective of our national representatives.”
