Washing-Up Charge A Christchurch woman was recently charged an extra threepence in a city coffee bar for the use of a knife and fork. She had bought food at the coffee bar, but was told that if she required a knife and fork, a charge of threepence for washing up was payable. The woman said she was told that this charge was common in Christchurch, but after further inquiries had been made a refund was offered. Inquiries by a reporter at coffee bars and tearooms in and around Cathedral square showed that none of the proprietors had heard of such a charge. Fine Day A light to moderate northeast wind cieared earlymorning cloud in Christchurch yesterday, and kept the temperatures moderate. The maximum temperature recorded at Harewood was 68 degrees at 2 p.m., and the same temperature wag recorded at the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. At 6 a.m. at Harewood the temperature was 49 degrees, at 9 a.m. 57 degrees, and at noon 66 degrees. The temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 66 degrees at 4.30 p.m. Cases Settled Both cases set down for hearing before Judge A. P. Blair in the Compensation Court yesterday were settled out of court. Five short cases are set down for hearing today, including a case begun on Monday and adjourned, part heard. Not In League Prisoners at Maidstone Gaol protested when the television they were watching was switched off in the middle of a film about how to plan a bank raid-About 50 prisoners had already seen half-an-hour of the bank raid film “The League of Gentlemen”, starring Jack Hawkins, when a warder switched off the set.
