RACING Tumble-Middy Win At Short Odds

"The Preet" Special Service OAMARU. Tumble and Middy won a favourites’ T.A.B. double worth £6lss for £1 at Oamaru yesterday.

Tumble, top-weight and a solid fancy after an easy win in the Banks Peninsula Handicap, won the Papakaio Handicap for his North Canterbury breeder, Mr J. B. Douglas-Clifford, after securing the run of the race behind the pace-maker, Balmaris.

Middy gave his course supporters some concern when he lost ground at the start of the Stewards’ Handicap. He was last when the field settled, but he showed his class in mastering the Riccarton light-weight, Sir Limond, in the last few strides. Middy also won this race last year before winning a rich sprint double at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Left In Front Balmaris was left in front soon after the start of the Papakaio Handicap, and J. M. Cappie soon found that none of the others sought the pacemaker’s role. Racing to the half-mile Balmaris was a length and a half clear of Tumble, with Retinue, Golden Boa, Early Dawn and Golden Vanity handy, and Cobble tailed off. Balmaris was two lengths clear into the straight, but Tumble gradually reduced her lead and won by threequarters of a length. Balmaris held on gamely to take second from Golden Vanity. There were two lengths and a half to Golden Boa,

ahead of Early Dawn, Cobble and Retinue. Second Leg Flying York, which drew the inside, made a smart beginning in the Stewards’ Handicap and led to the furlong. The favourite, Middy, was last away and Carpenter was also slow.

Racing to the half-mile Flying. York shaded Status Symbol, with Gay Doctor and Sandbank close ahead of Last Dip. Flying York i began to weaken near the furlong. Sir Limond led soon after, but he was unable to hold Middy in the last 50 yards. There were two lengths and a half to the outsider Last Dip, which took third from Flying York. Gay Doctor, which was unable to quicken over the final stages, was next ahead of Carpenter, which made ground in the run home, Certain, Newbrook, and Ibn.
