Decimal Postage Slightly Lower

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 13. Decimal conversions for the basic inland postage rates were announced today by the Postmaster-General (Mr Scott).

Surface and air letter rates will be slightly lower than at present. The new rates are:— Surface Letters: 3 cents for the first ounce, 2 cents for each additional ounce. Airmail Letters: 4 cents for the first half-ounce and 2 cents for each additional half-ounce. Printed Matter: 2} cents for each 8 ounces.

Mr Scott said that the printed matter rate had converted exactly, but the con-

version of the surface and air letter rate would lead to a reduction in postal revenue amounting to about £14,000 a year. One Coin For Calls The charge for a local telephone call from a public box would be converted from 3d to 2 cents, he said. This would mean a further reduction in revenue of ,6d a call and would amount to about £45,000 annually. The Minister said that this rate would be much more convenient to telephone users as they would require only one coin instead of three as at present
