APPROVAL RECOMMENDED Motorways Plan To Be Discussed

(From Our Own Reporter} WELLINGTON, March 13. The transportation network proposed for Christchurch, including the Northern and Southern Motorway outlets, will be discussed by the financial committee of the National Roads Board at a special meeting on April 18.

This was decided by the National Roads Board today, following presentation of plans of the over-all network, and of die proposed urban motorway between Chaneys and Bealey avenue.

On the motion of Mr W. H. Brown, the private motorists’ representative, the matter was referred to the finance committee for discussion. Representatives f ot the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority, the Walmairi County Council, the Christchurch City Council, and the District Commissioner of Works will be invited to attend. The Chief Highways Engineer (Mr F. A. Langbein) recommended that the board approve in principle the network of motorways and primary roads, and that it request local authorities to incorporate the section ot motorway between Chaneys and Bcaley avenue in their district schemes. “The Christchurch Regional Planning Authority car-

ried out the transportation survey in 1959 and results were described to the board on its visit to Christchurch in May 1967," Mr Langbein said in his report. “Since then continued investigation has taken place and the proposed network of routes has been approved by the local authorities. “The Regional Planning Authority has requested boaid approval to the whole plan in principle and in particular to the line of this northern motorway between Chaneys and Bealey avenue so that this section of motorway can be protected by incorporation in district schemes. “The proposed network of motorways, expressways and primary roads has been evolved from the desired interzonal movements estimated for 1980. This network has now been tested for capacity in 1980 and, although some adjustments to ramp locations within the central city belts may be necessary, has proved capable of taking the estimated volumes."
