TENDERS IN N.Z.

Baggage Unit For Airport Because of import problems, tenders have been called for the manufacture locally of revolving baggage-, handling equipment for the overseas terminal of Christchurch Airport Because of difficulties importing a baggage carousel from Canada, it had been decided to see whether New Zealand firms could do the job, the airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) said yesterday. “We will be most interested to see how they tackle the job," he said. A revolving unit 30 feet in diameter was required, Mr J. Inch, City Council design engineer involved with planning, said yesterday. Baggage from arriving aircraft would be placed from trolleys on a sloping turntable, most of which would be screened from the public, he said. Passengers would quickly and easily claim luggage from an access point. The successful tenders would be selected on March 20. Mr Jamieson said the handling unit would be housed in extensions to the baggage area of the terminal, at present under way. This work, and extensions to the overseas lounge, would take until September or October.
