FIRST TAVERN LICENCE GIVEN

The first tavern licence in the Canterbury Licensing Committee’s area has been issued to the Woolston Hotel, Ferry road, which will now be known as the Woolston Tavern. The hotel is owned by Ballins Industries, Ltd. The manager of the hotel is Mr G. Rew.

Under section 184 of the Sale of Liquor Act the holder of a tavern keeper’s licence is responsible at all times for providing adequate facilities for the sale, supply and consumption of liquor pursuant to bis licence and maintaining in good order all faculties, other than structural,

for the prevention of fire and for means of warning and escape in case of fire. The holder of a tavern keeper’s licence has to make a return, within one month of March 31 each year to the clerk of the licensing committee, of the gross amount paid for the purchase of all liquor sold during the year to March 31.

Any profit from the hotel improvement account may, with the consent of the Minister of Justice be used for the following:— 1— For defraying or subsidising costs of scientific research into the use of liquor or the education of the public on the dangers of the abuse of liquor. 2 Subsidising the costs incurred in the care, treatment or rehabilitation of alcoholics. 3 Subsidising costs in carrying out a scheme for the training of hotel staffs or for promoting and increasing tourist traffic from overseas. 4 Any charitable purpose approved of by the Minister of Internal Affairs.
