CLEARANCE SCHEME
Discussion On Rates Invited Ratepayers at Little River will be invited to discuss with the North Canterbury Catchment Board classifier (Mr A. C. Norton) the proposed amounts they should pay toward clearing the Okana stream and its tributaries.
About 30 ratepayers with properties adjoining or near the stream may have to find £l7OO toward the cost of clearing the stream. Heavy willow tree growth causes the stream to flood and spill on to surrounding properties and even the main road during heavy rain. Mr Norton told the Wairewa County Council that the cost of clearing the stream would be about £4500. Most of this would be financed from subsidies provided by the Government He said ratepayers would be able to discuss with him the amounts they should pay according to the proximity of their properties to the stream and the possible amount of flooding.
The council proposes to raise £l7OO by loan and repay it out of rates. Some councillors said they doubted the scheme would gain the support of everyone.
Those concerned will be invited to meet Mr Norton at the council offices on March 30 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
