MISS TIRIKATENE WINS S. MAORI
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 12. Miss Whetu Tirikatene took 75 per cent of the vote to win the Southern Maori by-election on Saturday.
The voting showed a 2 per cent swing from National to Labour.
Miss Tirikatene had a majority of 3535. The Social Credit share of the vote remained the same at 5 per cent for Mr J. H. Macdonald.
In only four of the 163 polling places did Miss Tirikatene gain fewer votes than her National opponent, Mr M. B. P. Pere.
The total vote was 6469 (49 per cent), compared with 7573 (63 per cent) in the General Election last November. The roll had increased from 11,845 last November to 13,230 by the addition of a supplementary roll. Polling Details
