CHAMPION AGAIN

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. R. A. Williams (Auckland) came through on the second day to win his ninth decathlon title at the New Zealand championship meeting at Auckland on Saturday.

Williams, headed by D. S. Norris (Auckland) on the first day, began his come-back in the 110 metres hurdles. He was l.lsec clear of Norris with a time of 16sec.

In the pole vault Norris could manage only 6ft 4)in but Williams spurted ahead with lift Bjin. Norris was well back in both the javelin and discus and, although Williams finished last in the 1500 metres, he was still well clear on points of the second place-getter, P. Three Waikato runners, K. Kellow, K. Rowe and R. Wakeford, turned in sterling performances to slightly loosen the Auckland stranglehold on the national junior track and field championships which finished at the Mount Smart stadium on Saturday. Rowe won the mile by choosing his own pace in the conditions and sticking to it in spite of the frantic front running of the Canterbury star, R. Tayler. Tayler had driven himself mercilessly to take the halfmile title earlier in the day. His time of Inun 55.55ec was much faster than was needed . for the winner’s medal and the gruelling effort was to tell ■ in the mile.

After jumping to the front at the start in the mile Tayler was caught by the bunch with a lap and a half to go, and drifted to second to last. Results of junior finals were:—
