Para-para-00-moo Goes
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 10. A change in policy on the pronunciation of certain Maori place names by radio and television announcers was described today by the chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation (Mr C. A. McFarlane).
Among the early decisions made is the naming of Paraparaumu. No longer will the town be called Para-para-oo-moo by announcers. It will be called Para-pa-ram. Mr McFarlane said: “Maori pronunciation has been the subject of considerable controversy in recent months and the subject was discussed fully at the February meeting of the corporation. “The members resolved that modified pronunciations
should in future be adopted by the N.Z-8.C., whenever anglicised variations have been in common local use for at least 25 years.” Mr McFarlane said it would be- some weeks before a decision could be reached in all cases, but instructions
would then be issued to announcers to use the popular form.
“I must emphasise that apart from these popular ex-
ceptions, every effort will continue to be made to maintain a high standard of pronunciation of the Maori language,” he said.
