Alarm At Rise In River Pollution

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 11. Alarm at the accelerated pollution of New Zealand rivers was expressed by a noted New Zealand angler, Mr C. Voss.

“It may be too late in some places to halt the ruination of the waters,” Mr Voss said on Thursday before leaving for Dunedin to continue a lecture tour.

“We are permitting—and in some cases even encouraging—the pollution of our waters. Before long they will cease to be useful for bathing, drinking or fishing.” Already, Mr Voss said, picnickers were taking their

own water to drink when they went to spend the day beside a stream. “How different this is from earlier times when nobody thought twice about scooping up a handful of water from any stream to drink.” Mr Voss is vice-president of the International Federation of Angling and Casting Clubs, and led a world championship-winning New Zealand casting team to Australia in 1959.
