Small Crowd At Mayfield Show In Cold, Wet Weather

Cold southerly rain fell during the forty-second annual show of the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association on Saturday. The resulting poor attendance was reflected in the low gate takings—£76, compared with a record £179 last year and £l6B the previous year.

Wet show days are not uncommon for Mayfield. There have been 14 since 1945, and conditions on Saturday, although wet and miserable, were not the worst the association has known.

The grand parade, the traditional colourful climax to A. and P. shows, was abandoned, and a number of competitors in ring events withdrew, although no events were cancelled.

Bain began to fall about 6.30 a.m. at Mayfield and continued with varying intensity throughout the day. The car parking area, side-show alley and areas surrounding the machinery display and showground buildings and tents were soon turned to mud.

The president of the association (Mr B. E. Lili) said the weather had been very disappointing. Because of the increased entries and keen competition the association had been set for one of its best shows.

Mr LiU said competition was particularly keen in flock sheep entries. Exhibitors were enthusiastic and had been greatly encouraged by stud breeders, he said. The judge of the light horse section (Mr G. D. Kelly) said the wet weather prevented the saddle horses showing their best The champion hack, Mr and Mrs A. L. and Miss D. F. Dunn’s Nightcall, was outstanding, and the general standard was of top class.

Mr Kelly said the champion hunter, Mrs P. Clarkson’s Simba, was outstanding and would rarely be bettered at any show. All riders showed good judgment in the wet conditions.

Mr H. Bennett, judge of the English Leicesters, said the entries were a fine lot. There was a good number in each class and they were easily up to the standard of bigger shows. The champion ram, exhibited by G. E. Gumbrell, and the champion ewe, exhibited by R. N. Clucas, were particularly good examples of the breed.

Considerable interest was shown in other sections which included poultry, farm produce, field roots, vegetables, fruit, dairy produce, preserves, juvenile cookery, bread, scones and pastry, cakes, cut flowers, decorative, photography and needlework. Entries, excluding schools, totalled 2083, compared with 2041 last year. An innovation this year was the inclusion of a national dancing competition in the programme. The judge, Mrs B. Rout, of Ashburton, said the standard was very good, but it would be pleasing to see entries in the (rider age groups another year. CHAMPIONSHIPS
