‘ONE-WAY TRADE’

Russia And N.Z.

Trade between Russian and New Zealand was mainly in one direction, the Russian Minister to New Zealand (Mr B. Dorofeev) said to the N.Z.U.S.S.R, society last evening. “We are spending here about £3 million to £4 million a year buying your wool,” said Mr Dorofeev.

“But we are selling here only £200,000 or £300,000 worth of goods a year. “The balance of trade is about 30-to-one in New Zealand’s favour.”

He said that unfortunately it was very difficult to get licences from the New Zealand Government to get Soviet-made goods into New Zealand. Even with firm orders for machine tools from the Soviet Union it was impossible to get licences.

Mr Dorofeev said that one ridiculous aspect of Russia's exports Was that it was selling fish products to New Zealand.

Russia was also selling fertilisers to New Zealand and he thought that in the next year or two, the sales would increase. Sooner or later New Zealand would be buying more Russian rubber goods. Already it was buying Russian-made watches.
