Engineers’ Reunion
About 550 former soldiers from many parts of New Zealand sat down to a dinner on Saturday evening which was the highlight of the seventh national reunion of the New Zealand Engineers. Canterbury Court was the venue for the reunion, which lasted throughout the weekend. On Friday evening the men attended a smoke concert. On Saturday they and their wives were taken on sightseeing tours around the city and on the hills. Among those present at Saturday’s dinner was the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella), a former engineer. The men were welcomed to Christchurch by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning). The toast to the engineers was proposed by the Christchurch City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) and replied to by Mr G. Armstrong, the Dunedin City Engineer. The toast to absent friends was proposed by Padre J. Dawson. A wreath-laying ceremony was held yesterday morning, at the Citizens’ War Memorial in Cathedral square, followed by a church service conducted in the Addington Show Grounds by the Rev. W. S. Dawson. Those attending returned home yesterday afternoon.
