AVIEMORE CRISIS
(N.Z. Press Association) OAMARU, March 12. The Aviemore hydro-elec-tric power project appears to have survived a week-end crisis which at one stage threatened to delay the completion date of the project. Ministry of Works engineers were faced with the possibility of having to breach the upstream and downstream coffer dams to let surplus water away. The diversion tunnel and pumps at Aviemore had been unable to handle water coming from the catchment area where eight inches of rain fell in the 24 hours to Saturday morning. At one stage, work was started on lowering the downstream coffer dam. The water had risen 27ft above the normal level. The crisis was averted when snow on the high country resulted in the water build-up being reduced.
