Maoris To Go To Polls Today
Voters from Hawke’s Bay to Stewart Island will go to the polls today to chose a successor to the late Sir Eruera Tirikatene as representative in Parliament for the Southern Maori electorate.
One hundred and fifty polling booths .will be set up for the by-election. Both the National and Social Credit candidates contested the 1966 General Election with Sir Eruera Tirikatene. and the only newcomer is his daughter and successor as Labour candidate. Miss Whetu Tirikatene. As her father held a majority of 3832 votes, Miss Tirikatene may be expected to retain the seat for Labour.
Sir Eruera Tirikatene held the seat uninterrupted since 1932 and Miss Tirikatene often campaigned actively for her father. Flight Lieutenant M. B. P. Pere (National) and Mr J. H. Macdonald (Social Credit) both increased their parties’ votes in the. 1966 election. Voting in the 1966 election was: Sir Eruera Tirikatene (L), 5474; M. B. P. Pere (N), 1642; J. H. Macdonald (S.C.), 457.
