A Drought Area

It Is never possible to generalise in the farming world. Most farmers in the province have now had almost two years of the best sort of conditions climatically that they could possibly expect. But a part of the province has not fared so well. Down country men attending last weekend's Tekapo ewe fair learned that drought was just around the corner—in other words that it was just through Burkes Pass. The central Mackenzie country has been hard hit by a drought that has been going on for close on a year and one which has intensified since there was a very poor spring last year. Hay cuts have been markedly reduced, if not eliminated. One runholder reported having not had a bale off a stand, while an adjacent one under irrigation has produced many hundreds of bales. The conditions have caused some runholders to quit stock prematurely and at least one station, which is usually strongly represented at this fair, had no sheep in at all this year and in other cases numbers of stock held for disposal at this fair were reduced.
