N.Z. PLOUGHING TEAM
These are tbo members of the New Zealand team for the world ploughing contest which will be held in the Prebbleton-Broadfield district on May 12 and 13. S. M. Allison, who farms 200 acres near Milton in Oiago, has ploughed in 10 of the 11 New Zealand ploughing championships held so far and is the first man to win two national titles. He was national champion at Hastings in 1959 and subsequently ploughed in the world match that year In Northern Ireland. He won his second title near Gore last year.
I. B. Biair farms in partnership with his father and a brother at Outram in Otago. He has ploughed four times in national finals and last year was runner-up to Allison. As a result he and Allison will be New Zealand’s representatives in this year’s world match. This will be the first occasion that New Zealand has been represented by two men. In the past the cost of travel has precluded more than one man representing this country.
long standing. He is Mr G. C. Hurst who farms 850 acres at Papakaio in North Otago. On this mixed sheep and cropping property he runs about 2500 sheep,' including 2000 ewes, and grows about 150 acres of wheat and harvests small seeds as well.
A former president of the New Zealand Ploughing Association, Mr Hurst has been a member of the committee of the association since its inception. He has been secretary of the Papakaio Ploughing Match Association since about 1947. Mr Hurst and the two ploughmen make up an Otago team.
