AN EGYPTIAN SHIP of about the 18th century B.C. The picture is of a model designed and built from very ancient drawings preserved in the tombs of Aboukir and dating from the reign of the Pharoah Sahoure. The fleet of this Pharoah sailed along the coast of Phoenicia, bringing back cedarwood and Semitic slaves. The picture is from a plate in “Peoples, Seas and Ships,” by Zvi Herman, translated by Len Ortzen, and published by Phoenix House. Mr Herman, managing director of an Israeli shipping line, has a long-standing interest in seafaring in ancient times. In this book he writes of the infancy of deep-sea voyaging in the eastern Mediterranean, and with his story of maritime events he links the political, social and religious histories that profited from the contacts made by seamen. Mr Herman’s book is richly illustrated by maps and half-tone illustrations, and notably by 10 double pages in full colour which show in the clearest detail a whole museum of ancient ships.
