Juniors’ Fishing Privilege To Be Withdrawn

A proposal that junior fishermen should no longer be permitted to use worm and natural baits in restricted waters was supported at a meeting of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society’s council. A motion that juniors be permitted to continue using such baits was lost on a show of hands. It had been decided to withdraw the privilege because it had been greatly abused, said the chairman of the fish committoe (Mr N. I. Voyce). The North Canterbury modification notice, under the Fresh Water Fisheries Regulations, was coming up for renewal and it was proposed that the provision allowing juniors to use natural baits be discontinued.

Mr G. Mugford opposed the withdrawal of the privilege and proposed the motion that was defeated. All junior fishermen should not be penalised because of a few who misbehaved, he said.
