A record off achievement WMihi four yean of its inception, Vibrapac had established technical leadership in this country both for the manufacture and the application of the silver grey unit, the demand for which, for all classes of building, rapidly gained momentum. A new factor had now to be taken Into account—one which was to affect Industry in many fields—not least the manufacture of concrete masonry. The demand was for colour, and It was world-wide. Manufacturers of a large variety of consumer goods—paints, fabrics, machinery, furniture, household appliances, to name but a few—were forced to extend their colour range in order to satisfy this “colour hunger" which was as insistent as it was unprecedented. This wa« the position early in 1955. To meet the new challenge, as well as to keep abreast of the latest developments and compare progress at home with that overseas, a visit was made by a Vibrapac representative to the United States. This visit covered many areas where access to raw materials, and economic factors were comparable with conditions in New Zealand. It was found that, even in the most durable of building materials, colour was dramatically in demand, and a form of masonry, new to the industry both in texture and colour range, was gaining prominence on the American market. Split Block, the new material, with its exciting possibilities, was seen as the answer to the demand by New Zealand home owners for a permanent maintenance-free building unit, different in texture and pleasing in colour. Vibrapac acted swiftly in securing deposits of the finest coloured aggregates in the South Island, and by early 1956 the Company's Research and Development Division had produced a split block of unique distinction. This was SUMMERHILL STONE, the basic aggregate of which is Balmoral Marble. Its high quality, novel texture and beautiful colour, together with the precise timing of its introduction, ensured the immediate success of the new unit. The mqrketing of SUMMERHILL STONE is one of the most dramatic and successful achievements of the kind In this country. Today SUMMERHILL STONE is used throughout New Zealand, and has aroused overseas interest. Its popularity Is reflected in all the more recent subdivisions throughout Christchurch, where it is usual for more than eighty per cent of dwellings to be built in this material. HEATHERSTONE, manufactured by Vibrapac (Otago) Limited, and DUNSTAN STONE, by Otago Central Concrete Limited, are split blocks with their own distinctive qualities and colour ranges.
