COMPETING IN S.A.
(N Z.P. A -Reuter—Copyright) LONDON.
The Olympic long jump champion, Mrs Mary Rand, said in London yesterday that refusing to compete in South Africa “would be like refusing to compete in Russia because it is a Communist country.” Mrs Rand and three other British athletes left by air for South Africa to compete in the national championships. The half-miler, C. Charter, said “This is not our problem. It is the South Africans’ problem. I’m not prepared to argue with their attitude." The team manager, Mr L. Golding, said: “I would rather see colour prejudice disappear from sport, but it’s South Africa’s problem, not ours.”
