United States officials in Washington, New Delhi, and Rome maintained silence today on a report that Svetlana Stalin, daughter of the former Soviet leader, has defected to the West
Diplomatic sources in Washington said she approached officials at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and was flown recently to Rome.
A State Department spokesman who emphasised that his remarks were carefully worded—said in Washington last night: “We have nothing to say about this matter.”
However, the department is expected to release a statement later.
