NEED FOR STUDY

Wellington Airports (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. Proposals for the upgrading of Paraparaumu airport to take trans-Tasman jet services received a set-back today when the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr Gordon) announced there was “no prospect” of starting construction in the near future. He said that although the primary reason was the economic situation, the Government was not entirely satisfied that all avenues of providng a satisfactory service into Wellington’s Rongotai airport had been fully explored. The Government accepted the eventual need for a new airport at Paraparaumu and had called for an “urgent study” of the possibility of upgrading the existing Paraparaumu airport to take Viscount aircraft. The Minister’s statement was described as “both disappointing and heartening,” by the chairman of the Wellington City Council Airport Committee (Cr. S. H, J. Duff) today. It was heartening because the Government had dispelled all doubts of the need for the Paraparaumu development.
