Young Ewes Back 40s At Little River

The impact of the depressed market for coarser wool was felt at the Little River ewe fair yesterday. This is one of the notable sales of the round of North and MidCanterbury fairs for young Romneys and as usual there was an excellent display of these sheep yesterday, but values fell a long way behind the near boom values recorded in the last vear or two.

On average values for young ewes were back yesterday by about 40s a head, but one heartening feature of the sale was that passings were relatively light and the bulk of the selection found buyers at auction.

There was only a small selection of older Romney ewes and it was probably as well as they met a depressed sale. Some of the better class sheep were not sold at auction, and for those sold values were at modest levels but about in line with late rates for comparable sheep. Contrast The offering of young ewes was considerably bigger than last year. It totalled 9942 head compared with 8130 a year ago. Once again it was a high quality exhibition of young Romney ewes with the bulk of the selection being well grown and of good breeding. But the sale was in striking contrast to last year's near boom market. Last year 101 pens out of 140 sold at £5 a head or more. Yesterday only 13 out of 165 pens reached 80s or over and nearly 100 pens sold for less than 70s.

For 17 pens sold yesterday the average price was slightly more than 40s less than for 20 pens of the same vendors’ sheep sold last year. This was a fairly massive decline arid considerably greater than the 20s to 25s drop recorded at recent fine wool fairs in North Canterbury. Vendors, however, seemed well aware of the new situation and almost invariably were prepared to meet the market.

The best of the two-tooths sold from 80s to 91s, with good at 72s to 775, average at 60s to 68s and others at 49s to 58s.

Most of the young ewes were purchased for the Peninsula, but a number of sheep also went to the West Coast and some as far away as Nelson. Yesterday’s top price was 91s paid to R. T. Masefield, of Akaroa, for a pen of 61. Last year this vendor received up to £6 10s and the top price of the sale was £6 17s. D. O. Masefield, of Goughs Bay, who had sales up to £5 12s 6d last year, realised 85s for 60 yesterday. Springvale estate (Little River), who topped last year’s fair at £6 17s, received to 84s yesterday for 69 and for their offering of 508 ranging in price from 57s to 84s their average was 77s compared with slightly in excess of £6 for 493 last year. J. R. Stanbury, of Western Valley, sold 75 at 83s and for his line of 401, which ranged in value from 70s to 83s, his average was almost 76s compared with £5 16s Id last year for 412. Sales at 82s were made by R. T, Masefield for 67, K. A. Rhodes (Flea Bay), for 75, and V. Craw, of Chorlton, for 60. Big Line Another big offering of 1407 two-tooths came in from Annandale Estate, Pigeon Bay, and for these sheep, ranging from 51s 6d to 775, the average was just in excess of 70s as against £5 4s 5d for 1194 at last year’s fair. Prices were at modest levels in the older ewe section of the sale and were also far below last year’s rates. Several pens, including some of the best sheep, were passed in at auction. The entry totalled 2817 compared with 2245 a year ago. Most of the ewes were five-year-olds and the best of those sold realised from 42s to 48s 6d, with the balance of the selection making from 34s to 40s. At these values these ewes were about in line with recent market rates. Compared with last year’s fair six pens sold yesterday realised on average about 23s a head less. Among the five-year-olds, the best money paid at auction was 48s 6d for 192 from Owenga Farm (Flea Bay). Last year sheep from this property sold to 64s for five-year-olds, and the top price of this section of the sale was 80s. Annual draft ewes from L. G. Maginness, of Whakamoa, Walnut, sold for 46s and for the one pen of sheep carded as four-year-olds which were sold W. S. L. Mcßae, of Little River, received 445. A line of twoshear ewee from Buchanan and Hay (Kinloch) sold for 44s 6d and six and eight-tooths for 40s. The following is a range of
