Lost Title On Last Dive

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON.

The New Zealand diving champion, R. M. Hood of Hamilton, wants another crack at the Australian title after being beaten on the final dive at Adelaide last week-end.

With only one of 10 competition dives left, Hood had totalled 638.35 points. Second and third, respectively, were the Jamaican Commonwealth Games silver, and bronze medallists, C. Robb and D. Wagstaff, both of Victoria, with 636.90 and 623.55.

"The title virtually rested on the last dive,” Hood said on his return to Hamilton yesterday. “All I needed was one real good dive to win.”

Hood attempted a back 1J twisting somersault, but he missed the mechanics of it.

“I don’t know what happened,” he said. Meanwhile, Robb and Wag-

staff turned on the pressure with brilliant triple twisting somersaults and scored enough points to relegate Hood to third place. The final points were: Wagstaff, 729.40, Robb, 719.40, and Hood, 700.75. Fourth was another New Zealander, W. Robertson, of Gisborne, now living in Queensland.
