MOFFAT CUP
Easy Win To Wellington (N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. Wellington got away to a perfect start in the third yacht race for the Moffat Cup at Timaru yesterday and held the lead all the way round the course to win from Auckland by 54 seconds. Conditions were ideal, with a moderate to fresh southwesterly wind. Some of the fleet carried their third crew member, but those who took two held their boats fairly well.
South Canterbury had the misfortune to lose the spinnaker halyard and capsized while trying to recover it. Southland also capsized during the race, and as a result, placings were consistent for most of the course.
Bay of Plenty, which won the first two races, was third. Placings were: Wellington, 1; Auckland, 2; Bay of Plenty, 3; Hawke’s Bay, 4; Taranaki, 5; Manukau, 6; South Canterbury, 7; Southland, 8; Otago withdrew.
