EARTHQUAKE IN JAVA
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) DJAKARTA, February 28. A sudden earthquake has hit the East Java city of Malang, demolishing more than 2000 houses and leaving at least 51 dead, says the Associated Press.
Sharp tremors in a high plateau area, surrounded by several live volcanos, struck early in the morning on February 20, the official news agency, Antara, said. Some 370 were reported injured.
More than 5000 houses were reported damaged. At least 78 mosques and churches were reported damaged beyond repair. REPORT DELAYED
Hastily organised rescue crews and troops are digging through the wreckage in search of more victims. Although the pleasant, cool mountain city of Malang is only a few hundred miles from Djakarta, bad communications delayed reports of the disaster. Several volcanoes have been smoking and rumbling with unusual force in the area in recent weeks. There was no report on a volcanic explosion in connexion with the earthquake.
