Development Of Hermitage Area
The general manager of the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company (Mr H. R. Wigley) has urged the speedy development of a greater number of recreational facilities in the Hermitage area.
Commenting on the proposal to build an aerial cableway at Mount Cook, Mr Wigley said such a facility was essential.
Other recreational outlets urgently needed were a golf course, swimming pools, skiing and skating areas none of which were even in sight, he said.
Mr Wigley who has joined the company investigating the cableway said many tourists soon became bored at the Hermitage for the want of something to do. Many went away disappointed because they had neither seen Mount Cook nor visited the glaciers because of poor weather. There was nothing else to do there.
Sorpe Americans had been known to say: “All right, we have seen your mountains. What do we do now?” There was nothing else for the average tourist who was past the tramping and climbing age group.
It was a matter of loosening up the Mount Cook National Park Board and making it realise that people went to enjoy the area.
