POWER LOST

Sub-Station Fire A small fire in an electrical sub-station in Centaurus road, near Murphy’s brickworks, last night caused between 200 and 300 homes in the area to be without electric power for about 73 minutes. Faulty insulators on. the lead-in power lines were arcing and the leaking power set fire to the roof of the substation. M.E.D. workmen had to cut off the line feeding power into the sub-station with the result that other sub-stations on the line were also without power. The other sub-stations affected were in Eastern terrace, Corson avenue and Waimea terrace. The sub-station in Sandwich road was also without power for a short, time.

The workmen then replaced the faulty insulators and power was restored to the area.

One machine from headquarters and one from Sydenham answered the call to the small fire in the roof at 8.11 a.m. Only slight damage was caused.
