RACING Otherwise May Win Wairoa First Leg

“The Press" Special Service

HASTINGS.

The highly-promising Otherwise, winner of the D. J. Barry Memorial Handicap on the first day of the Poverty Bay races last Wednesday, appeals strongly for the £lOOO Wairoa Cup, 10 furlongs and 80 yards, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Wairoa today.

Otherwise, which showed considerable promise as a hack, is at peak fitness. In the Barry Memorial he ran on very strongly to beat Capella. He has been raised seven pounds and will meet slightly stronger opposition.

Bientot, brilliant winner of the Leopard Cup at Gisborne on Saturday after being slow away, should be capable of another bold showing because she is at peak fitness. Dark Song, Calm Comet, Humber, Capella, Royal Red, Ta Vince and Prince Mahmoud have all shown promising form recently. Dark Song was fifth in the Barry Memorial Handicap last' Wednesday after being checked on the home turn. He shapes as if he will not be long winning in the open grade. Calm Comet ran a better race for fourth in the Leopard Cup, but Bientot should beat him again. She was most impressive and she came through her race so well that her trainer, R. Saxon, decided to give her another start at Wairoa before tackling the Napier Park fixture. Humber was well beaten in the Woodville Cup, but in this smaller field should be able to make a better showing. His best form would entitle him to support. Capella ran two good races for a second and a fifth at Gisborne. If he could reproduce his first-day showing he would be a threat Prince Mahmoud, which is inclined to be erratic, finished third in the Leopard Cup, and as he is particularly fond of the Wairoa track he will also have to be taken into consideration.

Royal Red was most impressive winning the Carroll Memorial Handicap at Wairoa a month ago. He has not raced since, but if he parades in anything like the same order he will make his presence felt He appears to have a very bright future as a handicapper. False Problem was disappointing on Saturday on the firmer ground. Ta Vince ran a bold race in the sprint and is thoroughly seasoned. It may not be long before she regains peak form at a middle distance.

The issue In the Beefeater Gm Handicap, six furlongs, could be between Harry Lauder, whose form recently has been outstanding, and Astral Blue, which was badly checked during the Stewards’ Handicap at Gisborne on Sat-

urday, and dead-heated for fifth. Harry Lauder won on the Wairoa course a month ago and then won the Wanganui Flying Thousand. He only has 121 b above the minimum, so he should win again. Astral Blue, a good galloper, received six pounds from Harry Lauder and should test him. Killeymoon failed at Gisborne but won at Wairoa last month. He and his stablemate, Prince Mahmoud, like the track. The weather has been settled on the East Coast and the track should be fast Selections:— 12.30 p.m. Hurumua High-weight: My Surprise, Sir Loin, Excite. 1.5 p.m.—Nuhaka Novvice: Reaal, Great Luck, Great Affair. 1.45 p.m.—Waiau Handicap: Ticotat, Albaneta, Redaire. 2.20 p.m.—Paeroa Novice: First Night Out, Phylene, Llanarae. 2.55 p.m.—Wairoa Cup: Otherwise, Bientot, Royal Red. 3.40 p.m.—S u m m e r Handicap: Gurkha, My Surprise, Albaneta. 4.25 p.m. Beefeater Handicap: Harry Lauder, Astral Blue, Killeymoon. 5 p.m.—Farewell Handicap: Top Cat, Ticotat, Bellamour.
