Market Tends Firmer For Fine Wool Ewes

Fine wool ewes met another good sale at the Amberley northern section fair yesterday when on a quality for quality basis the market was considered to be in advance of rates paid at the southern section fair last week. A feature of the sale was the widespread competition.

Although the gallery following the sale was not unduly large there were keen buyers in its midst and sheep went to widely scattered districts, including Blenheim, Cheviot, Motunau, Rangiora, West Melton, Halkett, Kirwee, Darfield, Dunsandel, Southbridge, Rakaia and Ashburton as well as Amberley itself. The offering this year showed a further increase to 14,587 head from 11,647 last year, and included 6747 two-tooths (6069 last year) and 7840 older ewes (5578).

As was the case at the southern section fair last week the sheep yarded yesterday have seldom looked better. Almost invariably they were in excellent condition. The sale opened on a very even selection of two-tooth ewes, and a feature of the two-tooth sale was the fairly narrow range within which values moved. Relatively few twotooths sold for less than 70s, and this made the smaller twotooths look dear alongside the more attractive offerings. Once more buyers showed a preference for the finer wool sheep. Values were generally at least as grood as at the two North Canterbury fairs last week and could have been better. For 18 pens sold yesterday values were on an average 24s a head lower than for 19 pens of the same vendor’s sheep sold last year. This margin was very similar to that shown at Hawarden last Thursday. The best of the two-tooths brought from 85s to 955. with good at 77s to 84s, average at 70s to 765, and others (and there were only a few in this category) at 50s to 655. Many Over 60s For the more attractive offerings of older ewes the market continued on a very strong note. Whereas last year most of the four-year-old ewes sold at 70s or better, yesterday about 12 of the 22 sales made of ewes of this age group were at 60s or better. The top five-year-old ewes also sold at better than 60s, and there was an outstanding sale at 70s. Compared with last year’s fair 12 pens of four-year-olds sold yesterday showed a drop of about 17s per head, and this was identical with the depreciation recorded at Amberley last week. The best of the four-year-olds realised from 66s to 735, with good at 60s to 655. average at 52s to 58s, and others ranging down to 445. If anything the five-year-olds showed a lesser drop on last year than at either last week’s Amberley sale or Hawarden. For eight pens sold yesterday the’

decline was between Ils and 12s compared with 13s at Hawarden and 16s at Amberley a week ago. The tops of this age group brought from 60s to 70s with good at 54s to 58s, and average at 42s to 48s. A single sale of four and five-year-old ewes was made at 58s 6d. Two-tooth ewes sold up to 95s for 66 attractive Corriedales from W. Dampier-Crossley (Glenalbyn, Parnassus), who also had another 84 at 90s 6d. Last year the Glenalbyn twotooths made £5 14s and £5 12s. P. and K. M. Le Cren Children’s Trust, One Tree Hill, Parnassus, shared top honours last vear at £5 16s. Yesterday they had another two good sales, but at more modest figures. For 117 Corriedales they were paid 92s and for a big line of 226 they received 91s. E. J. D. Good, of Matiawa, Kekerengu, who was equal last year with the Le Cren Trust at £5 16s, sold 69 of his halfbred two-tooths yesterday for 86s and this was also the price received by I. S. Douglas, of Te Ngapiri, Cheviot, for 111 Corriedales. For 107 Corriedales R. D. Parsons (Nga Motu) was paid 85s and this price also went to H. M. Good (Waiwera, Kekerengu) for 68 halfbreds. Four-year-olds

Top price for four-year-old ewes was 735, which went to C. M. Souter, of Argyll, Cheviot, for 154 Corriedales. E. J. D. Good, who was paid 81s last year, sold 147 halfbreds yesterday at 68s 6d, and H. M. Good had 180 halfbreds at 66s 6d, which was also the price received by R. S. Latter and Son (Blytheburn, Cheviot) for 157 Corriedales. The estate W. N. Masefield (Ellerton, Kekerengu), who shared top price last year at 89s, had 200 Corriedales which brought 65s yesterday and another 81 in the same offering which sold for 645.

The P. and K. M. Le Cren Children’s Trust, which headed the five-year-old ewe section last year at 795, did relatively better than most vendors to sell 337 Corriedales of this description yesterday at 70s. B. D. Childs, of Fernhill, Cheviot, had a sale at 60s 6d, and J. G. and D. L. Barnes (Hydowns, Cheviot) sold 142 at 58s.

The only pen carded as four and five-year-olds were from D. S. Costello, of Springs Terrace, and these Corriedales realised 58s 6d. A pen of mixed age ewes sold for 535.
