With the other semlfinalists the girls at right will go to Wellington on March 15 for the final of the “Teen Princess” contest on March 17. The judges will be the Mayor of Wellington (Sir Francis Kitts), as chairman, Mr P. Sinclair, a radio and television announcer, Miss G. Phelps, a former “Miss New Zealand”; Miss S. Jones, a Wellington Field Service scholar, recently returned from the United States; Mr Gwynne-EHis, managing director of Cyclax (N.Z.), Ltd., co-sponsor, with the “New Zealand Weekly News,” of the contest; and the editor of the “Weekly News.” The winner will fly by Air New Zealand to the United States, where she will take part in the international “Teen Princess” pageant in Chicago from May 21 to May 26. Miss Vivienne Oakley, aged 16, of Ashburton, a student who lives on a farm in Mayfield, gained more than 1000 votes to win the semi-final for the Otago, Southland and Canterbury districts. With nine other girls from the rest of New Zealand, Miss Oakley was selected by nation-wide readers of the “New Zealand Weekly News,” who voted for the top ten of 100 girls selected from the initial entry of nearly 200.
Miss Karen Mackay, aged 15, a Nelson student, gained more than double the number of votes gained by her nearest opponent in the Nelson, Marlborough, Westland district This district had one of the highest numbers of votes in New Zealand.
Miss Christine Byfield, a 15-year-old shorthandtypist, of Christchurch, led some very close voting to become the Christ church district “Teen Princess.”
