Three Stop-Work Meetings
(N.Z. Press Association)"
WELLINGTON, February 27. More than 1000 workers took part in three stop-work meetings in Wellington today. The 780 members of the Harbour Board Workers’ Union held two half-hour meetings at King’s Wharf between 12 and 2 p.m. to endorse the actions of the Federation of Labour in condemning the Government’s economic measures. About 300 Trades Council and union delegates turned up for a meeting at the Trades Hall to discuss arrangements
for a mass stop-work on March 17. The March meeting will be held in the Town Hall and Concert Chamber. “This will accommodate about 3000 workers,” the vicepresident of the Trades Council, Mr*T. Hill, said tonight.
He said all the main unions were represented at today’s meeting, some of them sending as many as 30 delegates. Many delegates at the meeting called for stronger measures than the F.O.L. advocated but it was unanimously agreed to support the interim measures and if more actions were called for discussions would be held. The Harbour Board workers’ meeting endorsed the actions of the F.O.L. in calling the national stoppages. They also agreed to support any other actions called to
protest against the Government’s economic measures. “The Government is going to find out just how the workers feel about the present situation,” said Mr Hill. The secretary of the Wellington Employers’ Associa-
• tion, Mr G. A. Turner said workers would not be paid for ; time taken to attend the meet- ■ ings next month. t “This adds to our cause," said Mr Hill. “Workers are ■ prepared to lose pay to make • this protest.”
