ANTI-POLLUTION. February 10, 1967.

[Mr W. P. Spencer, secretary-manager of the Canterbury Education Board, replies: “The chimneys erected at the schools referred to are in conformity with the type generally erected in schools of this size. It will be noted that these particular schools were designed before the passing of the Atmospheric Pollution Regulations, which in any case are not specific as to requirements in particular cases. The method of heating referred to in the letter is by no means ‘antiquated.’ It will be of interest to your correspondent to learn that the Interdepartmental Fuel and Power Committee generally insists on this form of heating in schools. Public money is therefore not being mis-spent as stated in the letter, but is being spent in complaince with the ruling of this national commitee. If, however, the person referred to has any specific complaint arising from the operation of these furnaces I would suggest that he either write or call at the board’s office.”]
