FATHERS BEST

Sons Lose Yachting Honours went to the fathers when they and their sons and daughters swapped boats for the annual fathers* race in P class yachts at the Christchurch club yesterday. Sailed in a carnival atmosphere, with a Le Mans-type start, the fathers showed there were many tricks that their sons had not yet learned. There were 16 fathers to sail the P class while eight boats were competing to find the best juniors in the senior craft. All contestants for the major event were weighed in and handicaps adjusted accordingly. The scratch boat was G. Lester, carrying a modest BJst, while the top weight went to K. Prier, with ISJst, all this in a miiscule seven-footer. R. M. Bassett took line honours by nearly one minute from G. S. Mander. with A. J. Ebert third and H. L. England fourth. The women’, race was well won by Miss J. Lester, In an O.K. Dinghy, from Mrs G. Harrison, in Jolifin, after Miss S. Papps had led all the way only to lose the wind on the finishing line. The first heat of the Peter Mander Trophy for inter-school I yachting was sailed on the Waimakarirl river on Saturday, and was dominated by Linwood High -School. Boulton and Woods outclassed the others In a fresh north-easterly breeze, to win by the huge margin of 10 minutes. There were four withdrawals and some disqualifications.
