The Sumner lifeboat spent six hours last night searching the sea between Sumner and the mouth of the Waimakariri river after a Clifton resident reported seeing flares about 8.40 p.m.

The lifeboat station siren was sounded and the boat was launched at 8.45 p.m. and an area past the breakers at the mouth of the estuary was searched. Nothing was seen and at

the request of the police the lifeboat set off for the mouth of the Waimakariri river. The river was reached at 12.30 a.m. and the crew reported by radio that they had seen nothing and were returning. They were expected back before 2 a.m. There was three to four miles of visibility with a full moon and a clear night. The sea was calm.
