Telephone Campaign

Mr R. Lake, a Christchurch timber worker who has launched a private campaign objecting to the 25 per cent increase in residential telephone rentals, now expects to

collect 1000 or more signatures to a petition which he will send to the PostmasterGeneral (Mr Scott).

More than 70 persons telephoned him at the week-end to say they wanted to sign. Mr Lake said yesterday that most of those who telephoned him were elderly persons living alone who could not afford the increased rental. They considered the telephone not a luxury but a source of comfort to them.

They felt they needed the telephone to call the police if anything went wrong, or to call relatives when they needed help in case of sickness, Mr Lake said. He said he had also had a number of offers from persons willing to help meet the expenses of his campaign.
