CANDIDATE FOR BY-ELECTION
Mr J. J. Forster, a North Canterbury Hospital Board employee, will be the Social Credit candidate for the Fendalton seat made vacant by the death of Mr H. R. Lake.
Mr Forster contested the seat at the last election, polling 1803 votes. He said last evening that the Fendalton branch of the party had renominated him as its candidate, and his nomination had been unanimously approved by the Canterbury regional committee of the Social Credit Party. Mr Forster, who has had
farming and journalistic experience, said he had planned to leave New Zealand on an extensive overseas tour soon, but the by-election would force him to cancel these plans. A meeting would be called by the Canterbury division of the National Party,. probably next week, at which arrangements for the forthcoming Fendalton by-election would be discussed, said the chairman of the division (Mr H. Cordery) last evening. Mr B. G. Barclay, who contested the Fendalton seat at the last election, is not expected to be the only Labour nominee. Labour interests in the electorate are now suggesting that Mr B. T. Brooks, a member of the Fendalton branch of the party, may be a nominee. He is a lecturer in law at the University of Canterbury. The Liberal Party might contest the by-election, said the chairman of the party’s executive committee (Mr A. A. MacKintosh). He said the executive had met earlier in the evening and had decided to call for nominations.
