MAGISTRATE’S COURT Two Admit Thefts From Cars At Beaches

Two men who stole goods worth a total of £172 14s from cars parked at New Brighton and Spencerville beaches in December and January were convicted on charges of theft when they appeared before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Kevin William Winterburn, aged 19, a boilerman (Mr M. J. Glue), pleaded guilty to seven charges of theft of property worth £172 14s. Robert Walker, aged 24, a machine operator (Mr P. F. Tempero), pleaded guilty to five charges of theft of property worth £B7 4s. They were both remanded on bail to March 3 for sentence. The offences occurred between December 22 and January 29. Property stolen included towels, duffel bags, rugs, tools, binoculars, and clothing. THEFTS ADMITTED Christopher Lynton Dell, aged 19, a crane driver, John Robert Vaux, aged 18, a truck driver, and Dennis Murray Knight, aged 18, a painter, were each convicted on charges of theft and were remanded on bail to March 3 for sentence. They were represented by Mr R. S. D. Twyneham and they pleaded guilty to all charges. Each was charged with theft from the premises of Milne Motor wrecking Company on February 10, burglary of a shed in Chureh road, Templeton, on February 7, and theft from a building site on February 3. Dell and Vaux were also charged with theft of car parts worth £l2 on February 3, and tools and a wheel assembly from Waterloo Garage on February 7. IDLE AND DISORDERLY After being thrown out of his room in Gloucester street the accused had spent a week in the Merivale Church, said Detective-Sergeant Dalzell when Matthew Jon Smith, aged 33, unemployed, pleaded guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly on February 24 in that he had insufficient lawful means 1 of support. He was convicted and ■ remanded in custody to March 1 3 for sentence. DISQUALIFIED

A man who had been disqualified from driving but allowed to drive during the course of his occupation pleaded guilty to a charge of driving other than in the course of his occupation on December 18. He is Robert Malcolm Galvin, aged 33 (Mr A. Hearn).

SUPPRESSION REFUSED Charged with casting offensive matter in a public place at Kaikoura on December 29 and wilfully exposing his person in a public place on the same date, Lance Jeffrey Barnes, aged 24, a sheet metal worker (Mr E. O. Sullivan), was convicted and fined £3 on each charge, with witnesses expenses of £6. He pleaded guilty. Suppression of name was refused. ASSAULTED WIFE Charged with assaulting his wife on February 15, Robert Eric Lee, aged 34, a builder’s labourer (Mr D. H. Palmer), was convicted and fined £l2, in default 48 days’ imprisonment. He pleaded guilty. CHARGES DISMISSED Colin Brian Rapana, aged 23, a flourmill hand (Mr D. M. Palmer), and Edward Alexander Greer, aged 13. a shearer (Mr P. F. Tempero), pleaded not guilty to a charge that on February 19 they had unlawfully taken a car valued at £650, the property of K. O. Soper. The charges were dismissed. Greer also appeared on a charge of receiving from Rapana a camera knowing it to have been obtained dishonestly, and Rapana appeared also on a charge of breaking and entering a house at 393 Madras street. Each was remanded on bail to March 2. YEAR'S GAOL Lindsay Eric Gibb, aged 29. a salesman, was sentenced to a total of one year’s imprisonment when he appeared for sentence on two charges of indecently assaulting boys under FOUND IN BAR Guy Anthony Noel Hargreaves, aged 26, was fined £5 on a charge of being a minor found in a hotel bar at Akaroa on December 31. He pleaded guilty by letter. TRAFFIC CASES In traffic cases brought by the police, convictions were entered and fines imposed as follows: Careless use: William Guise, M; Geoffrey Wakefield Clemens, £3, disqualified from driving tor three months and ordered to attend course of traffic lectures (no safety helmet, £2). vlcted of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous in Blenheim road on October 13. Kingswell, a farmer, aged 23 (Mr P. G. Hill), and Woods, a shearer, aged IS (Mr I. C. J. Polson), pleaded not guilty In separate hearings. Kingswell was fined £2O and Woods £l5. Each was disqualified for 12 months. FINED £2O Peter Arona, aged 28, a glassworker (Mr M. F. Hobbs), pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous on the Main South road, Sockburn, on November 24. He was convicted and fined £2O and disqualified from driving for 12 months. CHARGE REDUCED

A charge against Wayn Kingsford Lindsay, aged 21. an apprentice fitter, of driving in a manner which might have been dangerous on the Main South road near Weedons on June 6, was reduced to one of overtaking without sufficient visibility, after submissions from Lindsay’s counsel, Mr J. G. Leggat. Lindaay pleaded not Kilty to thia charge also, but was convicted and fined £B. (Before Mr H. J. Evans. S.M.) GAOLED, FINED £l5O Graeme Chariot Talbot, aged 24, a painter, was Imprisoned for two months, to be followed by one year’s probation, and was fined £l5O when he appeared for sentence on a charge that at Oamaru on January 5 he drove a motor-car, having previously been convicted of driving while disqualified on six occasions.

A 19-year-old married woman was charged with assaulting a child aged 13 days, on February 21. Her name was suppressed on the application of Sergeant Townshend, who said there were unusual circumstances in the case. She was remanded for one month’s observation under Section 37 of tne Mental Health Act. Her counsel, Mr M. F. Hobbs, agreed to the remand and asked for interim suppression of name. Raymond Grein, aged 37. a timber worker, pleaded not guilty to chargee of assaulting Neville Frederick Page on December 24, 1960, and of being found unlawfully on the premise* of 18 Fortune itreet on the same day. Grein waa convicted on both charge* and remanded for a probation officer’* report and scntenc* until March 3. STOLE BLANKETS “Counsel'* view that the defendant’s taking of the blankets

Michael Cyril Thomas, aged 27, a freezing worker, was told by the Magistrate that he seemed to "have gone downhill recently.” Thomas was appearing for sentence on charges of unlawfully getting into a motorvehicle on December 17 last, two charges of burglary on the same day, and of false pretences on January 2. The Magistrate placed Thomas on probation for 18 months on the burglary charge, and fined him £l5.

Thomas was fined £7 on one charge of unlawfully getting into a motor truck, was ordered to pay costs only on the other, ana was fined £lO for obtaining credit by fraud. Restitution of £2O was also ordered.

The terms of Thomas’s probation were that he live and work as directed by the probation officer, that he refrain from liquor, and that he open a Post Office Savings Bank account. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge of proceeding when the way was not clear against Gordon John Machen, aged 25, a driver (Mr K. N. Hampton), was dismissed.
