Gift For President

This fishing basket made in the basket-making department of the Disabled Servicemen’s League In Christchurch, has been accepted by the President of the United States (Mr Johnson) as a memento of his visit to New Zealand. When the President’s visit

was announced, arrangements for the gift were made with the American Ambassador (Mr H. B. Powell), but lack of time prevented a personal presentation. The gift was

sent to the White House. The fishing basket, similar to one presented by the league to its patron, the

Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) was made at Riccarton by the superviser of the basket department (Mr L. Shaw, whose Christian name is also Lyndon) under the direction of the district manager (Mr S. G. Common). The United States Ambassador has now advised the Dominion president (Mr D. W. Russell): “This gift was received with pleasure at the White House last month. I have been asked to extend to you and the league President Johnson’s sincere appreciation of your organisation’s thoughtfulness in presenting to him this specially-made gift.”
