ROBOT DOCTOR

(N.Z. Prut Ann.—Copyright)

LONDON. A robot doctor which will start work soon in a big London hospital will cut down the time needed for essential diagnostic tests from 24 hours to 30 minutes.

This major step forward in modern medicine will be made possible by automatic equipment worth £15,000 and a £20,000 computer being installed at Hammersmith Hospital.

Each of the 35,000 patients who arrive annually at the hospital will have a single sample of his blood fed Into the machine.

Within 30 minutes, the results of up to 14 diagnostic tests will be available to the doctor in charge of the case. At the same time, all the data will be filed away for future reference in the robot’s memory drum.

The main purpose of the mechanical doctor—the first of its kind in Britain—will be a reduction in the routine work which doctors have to perform. This will eventually benefit patients by releasing doctors for more essential work, and lead to a cut in the average patient’s stay in hospitalnow about 12} days—by a least one day.
