RACING Jayess Is Reefton First Leg Fancy

Jayess and Coseta are selected to win the Reefton Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow.

Jayess is one of the obvious prospects for the first leg, the County Handicap, after a successful holiday campaign on the North Otago circuit. He beat Kalimera by two lengths over six furlongs at Oamaru on January 3 and failed by only a nose to beat Gay Doctor over the same distance at Kurow four days later. , Jayess will be racing on his home track tomorrow. He is prepared by J. Lalor, who also ( has the last-start winner, Clipper, in the field. Clipper won against the milers at Hokitika on January 16. In contrast to many of his runs, he came from the back and won easily. General Gilbert, top-weight with 8-10, was first home in this race last year with 51b less but was relegated to second behind Morris Francis after an inquiry. General Gilbert has not found ginning form this season, but has not been far away at times, and if he gets good footing tomorrow he should battle into the finish. Starts for General Gilbert’s stablemate Benefice, Warm Up and Charlborough in the County Handicap are unlikely. Carester is speedy, but the shorter distance of the Reefton Handicap will probably be more to her liking.

Coseta may bring off a lightweight’s victory in the Springs Hack Handicap, second leg of the double. This four-year-old stablemate of General Gilbert raced without luck at the C.J.C. summer meeting. His fifth in the Post Handicap on the first day was highly creditable after a bad check outside the furlong. At the weights Coseta with 7-10 might edge out Dark Chick (8-10) and Slantre (8-6) at the end of a mile and 150 yards. Dark Chick won over a mile and a quarter at Hokitika last time out, beating Slantre narrowly. On the same programme Red Treasure was a good second over seven furlongs.
