Everybody Knew
(New Zealand Press Association)
WHANGAREI, February 9.
When the 701-ton ship, Audrey B, sailed for Thailand this afternoon, everybody at Port Whangarei knew about it. Exploding fireworks, fired according to the tradition of the Chinese crewmen on board, echoed around the piles of the wharf as the ship prepared to sail. Laughing crewmen
threw crackers high in the air, and strings of crackers were exploded on deck in the Chinese tradition of seeking good fortune on the voyage. The Audrey B (formerly the Viti) is bound for Bangkok, with one port of call, Tauranga. From throughout South-east Asia, she will carry refrigerated cargo supplies for the United States forces.
