Ships Freed From Ice
The United States Coast Guard ice-breaker Eastwind, this week freed and escorted two Danish Antarctic supply ships out of heavy ice floes 40 miles off the Budd coast. The Nella Dan had been trapped in pack ice for almost a month and the Tbala Dan for 14 days when they were freed by the ice-breaker. Neither was damaged. The Eastwind first freed the Thala Dan and escorted it to the Australian Wilkes Station. The ice-breaker then freed the Nella Dan and after transferring its cargo for Wilkes Station escorted the supply ship to the sea. The Thala Dan is supplying Wilkes Station. The Nella Dan is on its way to Mawson Station. The Eastwind went to the aid of the two supply ships after a request for assistance from Australian Antarctic officials acting through the .Navy attache at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra.
