Intruders In Burial Cave
(N.Z. Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 25. The remains of a Maori princess were removed from a sacred burial ground near the headwaters of the Tokaanu stream this week, probably by children. Although the head and some other bones have since been returned, the incident has disturbed many Maoris in the Turangi area.
The remains were those of Hine-namu Rangimohia I, a woman of very high rank in the Tuwharetoa tribe, and who lived in the area about 200 years ago. The Ministry of Works has offered to seal the burial cave to prevent any further tampering with the remains, and a stone wall will be built across the entrance.
