RETURN TO WORK
Carpet Co. Setters
Twenty-four striking carpet setters at the Riccarton factory of the Carpet Manufacturing Company, Ltd., returned to work at 12.30 p.m. yesterday. They returned to work on the company agreeing to reinstate two sisters who had been dismissed. A third sister who had been dismissed, did not desire to return to work. A stop-work meeting scheduled for 2.30 p.m. yesterday was called off by the Riccarton branch of the Canterbury Woollen Workers’ Union.
The president of the Canterbury Trades Council of the Federation of Labour (Mr R. A. Hill) said that negotiations were carried out yesterday by the trades council on behalf of the Riccarton branch of the union.
The negotiations with the company’s management were through the Department of Labour.
It had been agreed to hold a meeting under the chairmanship of the South Island Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. W. Armstrong) on Monday to iron out the dispute.
The parties concerned, said Mr Hill, had agreed to accept the decision of Mr Armstrong.
