MAORI LAND COURT

Sitting Opens In City

A sitting of the Maori Land Court opened in Christchurch yesterday and will continue for the rest of this week.

The court is being held in the Provincial Council Chambers, and is presided over by Judge M. C. Smith, judge of the South Island and Ikaroa (Wellington) Maori Court districts. After a tribute had been paid by Judge Smith to the late Sir Eruera Tirikatene, the court adjourned for 15 minutes, as a mark of respect, before starting its business. There was an initial gathering of about 60 persons. Sir Eruera Tirikatene, said Judge Smith, had been an outstanding Maori leader, serving his race and his country with great distinction over a long period.' “On behalf of Chief Judge Jeune, and the other judges of the Maori Land Court, I extend to Lady Tirikatene and her family, and to the Maori people generally, our sincere sympathy in this time of sorrow,” Judge Smith said.

The court’s business this week comprises applications for successions to deceased persons* estates, probates, and alienations, liens, and transfers of Maori lands. In all, 127 cases are listed. The court clerk is Mr L. G. Royal. The court will next sit in Christchurch on May 23.
